Glougie, John R.
John R. Glougie, born in Vermont in 1839, served gallantly in the Union Army under General Grant during the Civil War, receiving a wound at the Battle of the Wilderness before his honorable discharge. Following his marriage to Martha Hull in 1865, he relocated westward to farm and homestead across Minnesota and Iowa, eventually establishing a successful agricultural livelihood. Seeking a more favorable climate due to failing health, he and his wife migrated to Fresno, California, in 1907, where he passed away shortly after in June 1908.
An esteemed Mason and widely respected pioneer citizen, Glougie left behind a proud patriotic legacy and a large, dedicated family. His widow, Martha, continued to reside at the family home on Blackstone Avenue, remaining highly active in the Christian Church and local civic circles. Supported by her nine surviving children—including local agriculturalists and business professionals—she maintained a deep interest in both her family’s historic genealogy and the long-term progress of Fresno County.
