Gatewood, Charles
Charles Gatewood, born in Iowa in 1855 to a historic Southern family, spent thirty successful years operating a portable sawmill before transitioning into agriculture. After farming across Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Iowa, he relocated to Fresno County, California, in January 1912 to secure better opportunities for his family. On his raw eighty-acre ranch near Rolinda, he established an advanced irrigation system featuring two wells and a twenty-five horsepower pump to support his crops.
Gatewood quickly became one of California’s premier livestock figures by specializing in pure-bred Poland-China hogs and producing hundreds of tons of market hay. His agricultural excellence was cemented in 1918 when his prize boar won the Grand Champion title at the California State Fair. Supported by his wife, Hester A. Allgood, and their four children, he remains a prominent leader within regional and state swine breeders’ associations.
