Garman, John Dunkel
John Dunkel Garman was a Pennsylvania-born brick contractor and agriculturalist who played a vital role in the physical construction of early Fresno. After learning the brick-layer’s trade under his father, he worked briefly in Iowa before permanently relocating to Fresno County in 1882. As a skilled tradesman and construction foreman, he helped build the city’s historic Hughes Hotel alongside many of Fresno’s foundational brick commercial buildings, continuing this structural work until retiring to a 400-acre grain and livestock ranch on Little Dry Creek in 1914.
Beyond his industrial contributions, Garman was highly regarded in local fraternal and civic circles as a dedicated Republican and a member of the Knights of Pythias. He suffered the loss of his wife, Mary E. Loper—a revered charter member of the Fresno Christian Church—in 1919, leaving behind their son, Roy, who served as the city editor for the Fresno Herald. Garman’s legacy remains deeply intertwined with both the urban architecture of the city of Fresno and the early ranching development of its surrounding valleys.
