Gammel, Elias
Elias Gammel was a prominent Russian-born viticulturist and agricultural developer who achieved notable success in Fresno County, California. Born in Saratof, Samara, Russia, in 1883, he was orphaned at a young age and later apprenticed as a moulder in a foundry before marrying Marie Veirt and briefly engaging in farming. Seeking new opportunities, he immigrated to Fresno in 1907, spending his initial eighteen months working as a ranch laborer. In 1909, Gammel purchased a twenty-acre ranch on Shields Avenue, which he transformed from a small dairy farm into a productive Thompson Seedless grape vineyard. He developed a highly successful real estate pattern, acquiring raw or underutilized land, cultivating it into premium vineyards, and selling the properties at a significant profit, including tracts in the Biola district. A dedicated member of the California Associated Raisin Company and a Republican in politics, Gammel was highly regarded for his business acumen, mastery of the English language, and devotion to his wife and four children.
