Gallaher, Marvin A.
Marvin A. Gallaher was a popular Tennessee-born entrepreneur and public official who became a trusted community leader in the foothill community of Squaw Valley, Fresno County. Born in 1881 as the son of a prominent physician, he received a liberal education in his native state before migrating to California in 1901 to work as a ranch hand. He later transitioned into commercial business in Porterville, Tulare County, where he successfully established and managed some of the town’s finest billiard halls and tobacco shops.
In 1917, Gallaher relocated to Squaw Valley, where he assumed the dual responsibilities of general merchant and manager of the historic local post office. Alongside his wife, Susie Breeden, with whom he raised four sons, he managed this vital local institution, which stood as one of the oldest and most historically significant outposts in the county. Deeply respected for his business acumen and integrity, Gallaher and his family were active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and dedicated contributors to the growth of their picturesque mountain community.
