Froelich, Otto
Otto Froelich was a pioneering Danish-born merchant, banker, and civic official who played an essential role in the founding of Fresno, California. Arriving in the early 1860s when Millerton was still the county seat, Froelich worked as a store clerk before taking over the business and leading the historic commercial relocation to the plains of Fresno upon the completion of the railroad in 1872. Operating out of a city that initially consisted of only two houses, he solidified his legacy as Fresno’s very first merchant.
Froelich further shaped the region’s economic foundation by co-founding the first banking house in Fresno County alongside Dr. Lewis Leach, William Faymonville, and Charles H. Barth. Known as Barth & Froelich, this institution served as the direct predecessor to the First National Bank. In 1880, Froelich was appointed Fresno’s postmaster, a position he later resigned to focus on a viticulture and wine-making enterprise he established with Dr. Leach. Highly regarded for his scrupulous integrity and public-spirited nature, he spent his later years working in San Francisco financial circles before his passing in March 1898, leaving behind an only daughter, Maren, a recognized artist.
