Fries, Henry
Henry Fries was a hard-working Russian-born pioneer who emigrated from Samara to Cincinnati in 1891 before permanently relocating to Fresno in 1893. He spent his first two years working in local vineyards to master regional viticulture before leasing land near Sanger to cultivate grain. Through decades of industrious effort, he acquired substantial land holdings across Fresno County, including the prominent 180-acre Grant vineyard, which he developed into a thriving raisin, orchard, and dairy operation.
Fries expanded his agricultural footprint by acquiring hundreds of additional acres for stock farming and crop cultivation near Wheatville and Kerman. In 1912, he retired from active farming and transitioned into urban development, building a handsome residence at the corner of C and Inyo Streets in Fresno. Alongside his wife, Mary Katie, with whom he raised seven children, Fries built and successfully traded multiple residential properties, cementing his reputation as a shrewd real estate investor and a dedicated member of the Zion Lutheran Church.
