Freitas, Geraldo J.
Geraldo J. Freitas was an influential Azorean-born agriculturalist and merchant born in the Azores Islands in 1862. Emigrating to California as a teenager in 1880, he arrived in a nascent Fresno and quickly established a major livestock enterprise. For two decades, Freitas operated as one of the region’s prominent early sheep raisers, managing herds that scaled up to 6,000 head as they grazed throughout the expansive San Joaquin Valley.
Following twenty successful years in the sheep industry, Freitas transitioned into the municipal trade by launching a local transfer business. In the spring of 1917, he diversified his commercial footprint by opening a reputable wholesale liquor house on Fresno Street, earning wide acclaim for his high business standards. A popular figure in local fraternal circles, he was a dedicated member of the Eagles, the U. P. E. C., and the I. D. E. S. Portuguese societies, and raised a daughter, Margaret, within the growing Fresno community.
