Biography Preview
John M. Fleming was a patient pioneer who arrived in California from New York in 1892. After working in early local vineyards and studying viticulture, he leased land to grow raisins despite low market prices. In 1902, he settled on 160 acres of rough stubble-field located five miles east of Clovis.
Fleming endured heavy losses from grasshoppers, frost, ground squirrels, and jack-rabbits, forcing him to repeatedly reset his crops. Through extraordinary labor, he eventually established a flourishing 120-acre estate featuring productive Muscat grapes, Zinfandels, and peaches. Alongside his wife, Emma, he raised five children while consistently supporting regional fruit associations and community reforms.
