Fisher, William S.
William S. Fisher was a dedicated oil industry veteran born in Missouri in 1875. He moved with his family to Hanford, California, in 1894 and initially spent several years working his way up to head miller at a local flouring mill. In 1902, he relocated to Coalinga, where he was appointed superintendent of the Mercantile Crude Oil Company shortly after its organization.
Under Fisher’s efficient management, the company expanded from a single well to six successful, oil-producing operations. Simultaneously, he utilized his resourcefulness to lease 2,560 acres adjoining the oil fields, establishing a profitable cattle-raising business with his sons. He raised four children with his wife, Cornelia, while serving as a local school trustee and community leader.
