Ferguson, James M.
Ferguson, James M.
James M. Ferguson was an experienced, Scottish-born pioneer who immigrated to California as a child in 1886. Learning the mechanics of drilling water-wells from his blacksmith and contractor father, he was well-prepared for California’s early oil boom. In 1903, he moved to Coalinga, where he successfully worked as a producing foreman and drilled multiple new wells.
Ferguson eventually secured a long-standing position as the superintendent for the Spinks Crude Oil Company, briefly stepping away to drill the city of Coalinga’s water-wells. Deeply embedded in his local community, he married Jane Lenhart, joined the Odd Fellows, and helped organize the Coalinga War Fund Association. His path-breaking efforts alongside his brothers left a lasting legacy within the region’s oil and utility industries.
