James G. Ferguson was a versatile executive born in Liverpool to an honorable Scottish family. After apprenticing for six years at the Bank of Liverpool, he traveled to Australia for his health and entered the shipping business. In 1886, he married his wife, Ada Florence Bond, and immigrated to California later that same year.

Ferguson initially applied his accounting skills to various regional lumber mills in Arcata, San Diego, and Puget Sound. In 1894, he joined the newly organized Fresno Flume Company as the long-standing manager of its Clovis office. He eventually rose to secretary and treasurer of the corporation, leaving a lasting legacy alongside his extensive fraternal and civic leadership.
