Farmer, L. B.
L. B. Farmer was born in Missouri in 1873 and began his commercial career operating a livery and sales enterprise alongside his brother in Lockwood. The partnership developed a highly successful livestock trading business, purchasing and shipping premium horses and mules to major Midwestern shipping hubs and securing lucrative military supply contracts to provide stock for the Spanish-American and Boer Wars. In December 1906, Farmer divested from his Missouri holdings and relocated to Selma, California, initially managing local livery operations and acting as an agent for the Standard Oil Company.
Transitioning into the real estate sector, Farmer established a prominent brokerage firm that evolved into the partnership of Farmer & Jacobsen, becoming a major catalyst for land development in Central California. He aggressively acquired agricultural acreage alongside his real estate practice, developing four distinct regional ranches that included 120 acres exclusively dedicated to grape cultivation. As a forward-thinking fruit-grower and an active member of the California Raisin Growers Association, Farmer championed systematic farming standards and individual operational excellence to elevate the economic prosperity of Fresno County.
