Farlinger, James
James Farlinger was born in New York in 1848 and left home at the age of fifteen, overcoming personal adversity and enduring severe physical injuries while working in the industrial salt works and lumber camps of Michigan and Minnesota. Driven westward by a pioneer spirit, he arrived in Washington’s Palouse country in 1877, where he secured homestead, preemption, and timber claims. Operating in an uncultivated territory devoid of roads or infrastructure, he cleared the raw land, established a prosperous agricultural estate, and steadily expanded his holdings to a substantial 740 acres.
As his farming enterprise flourished, Farlinger became a progressive force in regional development by constructing modern brick residences on his lands and investing in the commercial core of Uniontown, where he built a large brick mercantile building. Seeking a more favorable climate due to failing health, he eventually rented his extensive Washington properties and relocated to Fresno County. In his final years, Farlinger settled into pleasant retirement on a ten-acre vineyard west of Fresno, leaving behind a multi-state legacy of determined land development, successful commercial investments, and civic improvement.
