Fareta, Antonio
Antonio Faretta was born in Italy in 1875, where he balanced night school with early farm labor before serving a thirty-month enlistment in the Italian army. Following his marriage, he immigrated to the United States in 1898 with minimal financial reserves and initially worked for wages in Oakland. He relocated to Fresno County in 1900, spending his first few years working on regional track lines for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and laboring on local agricultural estates to accumulate commercial capital.
In 1904, Faretta leveraged his savings to open a modest grocery store on Fresno Street, establishing himself as one of the earliest retail pioneers on Fresno’s West Side. His business flourished to such an extent that by 1913 he replaced the original frame structure with a substantial, modern two-story brick commercial building to accommodate his expanding trade. A self-made entrepreneur, Faretta successfully diversified his business interests into commercial agriculture by developing a productive twenty-acre ranch on Shields Avenue dedicated to raising Thompson seedless grapes.
