Erskine, James R.
James R. Erskine was born in Illinois in 1871 and spent his youth working in Missouri coal mines, where his natural mechanical talent allowed him to rise to mine superintendent by age eighteen. He later pursued an engineering and industrial management career, directing commercial manufacturing facilities in the Midwest before relocating to California in 1904. His exceptional construction and technical skills caught the attention of leading industrial capitalists, who subsequently tasked him with building massive commercial cold storage operations.
In 1910, Erskine moved to Fresno to oversee the infrastructure development of the newly formed Valley Ice Company, where he designed and built massive railroad icing facilities across the region. Rising to general manager of all San Joaquin Valley operations, he coordinated the daily refrigeration of hundreds of railcars for the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads. Under his leadership, these advanced plants provided the essential cold storage network that made the nationwide shipping of fresh California fruit a commercial success.
