Engelmann, Henry
Henry Engelmann was born in Russia in 1871 and gained practical leadership experience during his service in the Russian military artillery division, where he served as a shop foreman while learning the shoe and harness-making trades. In 1900, he immigrated to California and settled in Fresno, establishing a solid foundational footprint by working as a commercial teamster for seven consecutive years. The capital and logistical experience acquired during this period enabled him to transition into independent agricultural production.
In 1907, Engelmann purchased his first forty-acre tract of raw land at Rolinda, systematically transforming it into a productive vineyard and alfalfa ranch over an eight-year tenure. Following a temporary return to the city, he acquired a second forty-acre property in 1918 within the Barstow district, northwest of Fresno. He completely modernized this new holding by installing advanced wells and a motorized pumping plant, developing the acreage into a high-yielding estate of Thompson seedless grapes, alfalfa, and grain. Deeply embedded in the regional agricultural economy, Engelmann protected his trade interests through active memberships in both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc.
