Engelman, Henry J.
Henry J. Engelman was born in Russia in 1878 and immigrated to the United States in 1900, traveling directly to Fresno, California. As a young man, he established a foundational work ethic by taking on varied physical labor across the county, including two years at the Craycroft brickyards and a year at Prescott’s brickyard. Through disciplined saving, he accumulated enough capital by 1909 to purchase an initial twenty-acre property thirteen miles northwest of Fresno, where he launched a dairy and alfalfa operation.
Recognizing that the regional soil was too valuable for dairy purposes, Engelman systematically transitioned his agricultural focus toward commercial viticulture. He expanded his holdings to a forty-acre estate and dedicated thirty acres entirely to specialized Thompson seedless grapes, while modernizing the property with a comfortable family home and farming infrastructure. Fully committed to the growth of the local fruit trade, Engelman protected his corporate and marketing interests through his active membership in the California Associated Raisin Company.
