Eliceco, Mariano
Mariano Eliceche was born in the Province of Navarra, Spain, in 1873 and immigrated to California at the age of twenty-five. Settling in Fresno County, he initially worked as a sheep herder to learn regional ranching methods and adapt to the local environment. Through careful accumulation of capital, he purchased his first independent flock within a few years, officially establishing himself as an autonomous livestock operator.
In 1904, Eliceche relocated his headquarters to Coalinga and subsequently acquired significant acreage near Alcalde to expand his hill-country sheep and cattle operations. His growing prominence as a regional stockman culminated in a high-level corporate partnership in 1914 with the influential Levy family interests, with whom he co-managed massive livestock operations until his death in 1918. A dedicated family man and respected pioneer within the local Basque and Spanish immigrant communities, Eliceche left behind a substantial land-holding estate that anchored his family firmly in the Coalinga district.
