Edwards, Edward Darnall
Edward Darnall Edwards was born in Missouri in 1846 and served four years in the Confederate Army under General Joseph E. Johnston before graduating from William Jewell College. After being admitted to the bar and practicing law in Tennessee, he permanently relocated to California during the 1876 Centennial Year. Settling in Fresno two years later, he entered into a legal partnership and quickly positioned himself as a foundational leader of the regional judiciary.
Edwards achieved significant professional distinction when he was elected District Attorney of Fresno County, managing the region’s public prosecution from 1882 to 1884. His legal prowess and integrity later earned him a highly competitive Democratic nomination for Superior Judge in 1900. Revered as the longest-serving member and elder statesman of the Fresno County bar, Edwards further served his community through leadership roles in his local Masonic lodge and church.
