Edgar, Johnston Josephus
Johnston Josephus Edgar was born in Missouri in 1860, where he completed a high-quality education and worked for several years as a dedicated schoolteacher. In 1889, he relocated to California and settled in the newly developing town of Sanger in Fresno County, initially working in a local lumber mill to support his transition. Driven by high personal ideals and a passion for agriculture, he spent his early years in the region mastering local farming techniques before acquiring a permanent homestead in 1902.
Edgar successfully developed his forty-acre property into a highly productive ranch, dedicating thirty-five acres equally to fruit orchards and grape vineyards. A civic-minded community builder, he actively fostered regional economic growth as an early promoter and member of both the California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach Growers, Inc. He also championed local educational development through his long-term service as a trustee for the Sanger High School, while raising a family that contributed heavily to the nation’s wartime service.
