Eckenrode, Henry
Henry Eckenrode was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1886, where he learned the baker’s trade before embarking on an extensive global military and civil career. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1907, participating in the historic Great White Fleet cruise around the world and serving structural deployments in both the Philippine Islands and Peking, China. Following his initial honorable discharge, he lent his protective experience to the Panama Canal Zone police force under General Goethals before completing a second term of Marine service in Nicaragua.
In 1917, Eckenrode returned to California and married into a prominent pioneer family from the Parlier section of Fresno County. With his brothers-in-law deployed in the military, he assumed the management of the twenty-acre Petersen family ranch in 1918. Utilizing his characteristic energy and strong sense of obligation, he quickly adapted to independent ranching, successfully overseeing the estate while anchoring his family in the western agricultural community.
