Dunkel, John
John Dunkel was born in Switzerland in 1859, where he served in the Swiss army and trained as a journeyman brewer across Germany, Belgium, and France before immigrating to the United States in 1882. Seeking a more favorable climate after working in New York, he relocated to California in 1883, gaining deep regional agricultural experience over the next two decades on various ranches across Napa and Sonoma counties.
In 1904, Dunkel turned his attention to Fresno County, initially working for his brother George in the Kutner district before establishing his own independent viticultural operations. Through strategic land acquisitions and subsequent scaling, he built a highly successful fifty-acre estate in partnership with his two sons, dedicating thirty acres to Malaga shipping grapes and twenty acres to Muscat raisin grapes. An innovative agriculturalist, Dunkel modernized his property with a handsome residence and an electrical pumping plant for advanced irrigation and lighting, while actively promoting regional economic stabilization as a proud member of the California Associated Raisin Company.
