Duke, Walter Wilson
Walter Wilson Duke was born in Missouri in 1870, moved with his family to Lakeview, Oregon, in 1876, and spent his youth learning agriculture and riding the open range. At age twenty-one, he began independent farming in Oregon before relocating to Modoc County, California, in 1898. There, he managed a local hotel and operated a sprawling 1,000-acre leased ranch, building a highly successful ten-year career focused on breeding sheep, cattle, horses, and hogs.
After selling his livestock interests and spending a brief period in San Francisco, Duke arrived in Kerman in 1909, initially cultivating an alfalfa farm before transitioning into commerce. He established a general merchandise store that grew rapidly due to his straightforward business practices, prompting him to construct a modern, reinforced concrete commercial block in 1915 to house his expanded operations. A driving civic leader, Duke further advanced the local business community as a charter member of the Kerman Chamber of Commerce and an active participant in the regional Merchants Association.
