Dron, William
William Dron was born in Dollar, Scotland, in 1883 and immigrated to California with his parents at the age of four, settling permanently in Fresno. After graduating from Fresno High School, he entered the regional agricultural market as a grain buyer for the prominent firm Balfour, Guthrie & Company, operating across various districts of the San Joaquin Valley.
In 1904, Dron pivoted from agriculture to the growing energy sector when he was transferred to the operations of California Oilfields, Ltd. Beginning his industrial career as a bookkeeper, he quickly shifted to the operating department to acquire deep technical expertise, working hands-on as a tool dresser, driller, and gauger to master well drilling and petroleum production. Following nearly a decade of field and logistical success, including his promotion to head of the traffic department, Dron retained his leadership role within the local oil fields after the corporation was acquired by the Shell Company of California, contributing significantly to the early industrial development of the region.
