Draper, Frank A.
Frank A. Draper was born near San Jose, California, in 1855 and spent his childhood navigating the rugged reality of the early frontier, including crossing the plains by ox team in 1863. After rejoining his family in Kingsburg—where his uncle had taken up the very land upon which part of the town was built—he partnered with his father to operate the prominent Temperance House hotel. He later transitioned into grain farming and successfully developed a lucrative forty-acre homestead of Muscat grapes, Thompson seedless grapes, and peach orchards just southwest of town.
Driven by an adventurous spirit, Draper temporarily left his agricultural pursuits to participate in the historic far-north gold rushes, joining the massive influx of prospectors to the Klondike in 1898 and making subsequent profitable expeditions to Nome over the following three years. Upon returning to Central California, he dedicated himself to horticultural advancement and regional resource management, effectively serving as the local superintendent for the Fulgham Canal Company’s drainage and irrigation network. A foundational citizen of the community, his family’s deep ties to the area’s layout are permanently honored by Kingsburg’s Draper Street.
