Douglass, G. M.
G. M. Douglass was born near Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1863, was raised on a farm in Kansas, and migrated to California in 1887. He settled on a homestead near Coalinga in 1889, where he engaged in grain-raising and witnessed early regional industrial history by helping haul the first successful Chanslor & Canfield oil rig into the Coalinga field. He later broadened his business and agricultural expertise by operating a grocery business in Hanford, managing a lemon grove in Visalia, and overseeing several large agricultural operations.
In 1916, Douglass brought his extensive agricultural knowledge to Fresno County to serve as the general superintendent for his sister’s expansive 650-acre fruit and grape estate. Operating from his headquarters on the 270-acre Kutner ranch, he successfully managed three separate properties across Fresno and Kings counties, which included a sixty-acre peach and grape orchard near Sanger and a 320-acre vineyard near Hanford. Known for his skill in soil cultivation and workforce management, he significantly enhanced the quality and output of these major regional holdings.
