Domengine, Adolph
Adolph Domengine was born in San Francisco in 1856, spent a portion of his childhood receiving an education in France, and returned to California as a youth to enter the sheep-raising industry alongside his father. He gained extensive, foundational experience driving and herding livestock throughout the state, eventually serving as a specialized sheep foreman for the prominent ranching firm Miller & Lux. In 1883, he independently established his own operations on Fresno County’s West Side by purchasing land claims, equipment, and thousands of head of sheep from Peter Etchegoin.
Through decades of industrious preemption, homesteading, and strategic property acquisitions, Domengine transformed his initial West Side holdings into a massive livestock empire encompassing roughly 10,000 owned acres and 5,000 leased acres. In 1912, he successfully transitioned his agricultural focus from sheep to cattle, utilizing his sprawling, spring-fed acreage to breed high-quality Durham stock. A highly respected pioneer and member of the California Cattle Growers Association, he managed his extensive ranching interests alongside his wife, Mary, and their three children.
