Diel, August
August Diel was born in Russia in 1866, where he received a common school education, completed four years of infantry military service, and worked as a farmer. He immigrated to Fresno, California, in 1899, where he initially provided foundational labor to construct the city’s early horse and electric transit lines. Following a brief period in ranching, he entered a commercial partnership with his brother to establish a general merchandising business on South F Street.
After his brother’s passing, Diel expanded operations independently by purchasing property at Kirk Street and Florence Avenue to erect a substantial store building and family residence. He successfully operated this venture as a staple neighborhood marketplace, stocking a diverse inventory of groceries, dry goods, hardware, and meats. A public-spirited community member, Diel supported local civic life as a Republican voter and served as a trusted church official while raising a large family.
