Dickey, William J.
Born in Ohio, William J. Dickey settled in early Fresno and worked as a dry goods clerk and hotel desk clerk while engaging in local civic and business affairs. He later amassed a substantial fortune after purchasing a cheap parcel of tax-delinquent land that successfully struck oil during the Coalinga oil boom. Throughout his life, he remained a deeply public-spirited citizen who actively promoted civic infrastructure, local banking institutions, and cemetery restoration projects.
Following his death in July 1912, Dickey’s ample estate provided a notable $25,000 public bequest to benefit the city of Fresno. His gift distributed $10,000 to purchase modern children’s playground apparatus, another $10,000 to fund a university scholarship for deserving local students, and $5,000 to support the Fresno County Humane Society. This timely and unexpected philanthropy left an enduring legacy, immortalized by the pioneer Dickey Playground established on Blackstone Avenue.
