Dickey, Jesse G.
Jesse G. Dickey was born on a Kentucky tobacco plantation in 1865 and was educated at the Male and Female Academy at Providence before setting out independently at the age of fifteen. He spent over a decade as a retail clothing salesman across the South before mastering the painting and decorating trade, which he followed for several years in the Middle West. In 1904, seeking a more favorable climate for his health, he relocated to California and settled permanently in Fresno.
After working for eight years as a local journeyman, Dickey established his own independent painting and decorating contracting firm in 1911 under the business motto of “quality first.” As a master contractor and industry leader, his commitment to exceptional craftsmanship helped define early Fresno’s commercial skyline and architectural landscape, earning him major contracts for landmark structures including the F. W. Woolworth Building, the First Christian Church, the Ball Block, and numerous prominent private estates. His professional influence extended statewide as an executive board member of the Master House Painters’ Association of California, while he simultaneously managed a forty-acre ranch northwest of the city and raised a family alongside his wife, Eunice.
