Dewhirst, W. H.
W. H. Dewhirst was born in Illinois in 1883, the son of a Methodist minister, and spent his early adulthood teaching before transitioning into the retail industry. After managing and subsequently owning a general merchandise store in Passport, Illinois, he moved to California in March 1910. He immediately joined the Selma Rochdale Company, an early cooperative mercantile house that had been founded in 1900 to serve the local ranching and horticultural communities of the San Joaquin Valley.
Demonstrating strong administrative aptitude, Dewhirst was appointed manager of the cooperative store in 1912, directing its operations until its formal dissolution and sale in late 1917. In January 1918, he helped establish a reorganized version of the Rochdale Company on High Street in Selma, continuing to serve as its progressive business manager. Under his leadership, the general merchandise emporium elevated the standards of cooperative commerce through community-focused service and careful curation. Beyond his mercantile career, Dewhirst raised four sons with his wife, Grace, and remained a highly involved member of Selma’s First Methodist Episcopal Church.
