Demera, Joseph
Joseph Demera was born near Naples, Italy, in 1872, where he was educated and worked in farming before immigrating to the United States in 1898. After a five-year stay in New York City, he relocated to California in 1903, initially working on a local ranch and subsequently spending nearly a decade rendering faithful service for the Standard Oil and Union Oil companies. Demonstrating strong industry and economy, he invested his hard-earned savings into Fresno real estate, acquiring multiple residential properties and building a successful commercial grocery store on E Street in 1917.
As a prominent civic leader and industrious entrepreneur, Demera became a foundational cornerstone of Fresno’s Italian community and local commerce. He achieved high distinction as a key organizer for Fresno’s historic Italian Day celebration in 1918 and served as the sole Italian representative on the city’s executive committee for Britain Day. A naturalized citizen since 1904, a dedicated member of the Catholic Church, and a supporter of the Republican Party, he worked tirelessly to advance regional interests while raising three children alongside his wife, Louisa.
