Dawson, William Lumley
William Lumley Dawson was born in Wisconsin in 1872 and relocated to Fresno County in 1892, where he quickly adapted his childhood farming experience to California’s unique agricultural climate. He acquired a twenty-acre parcel in the Vincent tract, transforming it into a highly productive personal vineyard and orchard property featuring a fine modern residence. Through his industrious efforts and specialized management skills, he simultaneously took charge of his father’s adjacent forty-five-acre peach orchard and vineyard alongside a separate eighty-acre hay ranch.
As a highly skilled horticulturist and viticulturist, Dawson actively supported regional trade infrastructure through his longtime membership and involvement in the California Associated Raisin Company. He raised a daughter, Alma, with his wife, Edna Parkes, a descendant of prominent western trail blazers who shared his deep passion for local history. Reflecting their deep pioneer heritage, Dawson and his family dedicated significant personal effort toward advocating for the preservation of regional historical records for future generations.
