Dawson, John A.
John A. Dawson was born in Wisconsin in 1846, where he was educated and managed his family’s home farm until relocating to Fresno County in 1891 after two preliminary winter visits. He purchased an eighty-acre stubble field and aggressively set to work transforming the raw land into a highly productive agricultural property. Through determined effort, he successfully established thriving alfalfa fields alongside a forty-five-acre orchard and vineyard complex.
As a prominent citizen of Clovis, Dawson expanded his professional activities by serving as an appraiser and local agent for the Scandinavian Mutual Protective Fire Insurance Association. He was a dedicated civic and religious leader, serving a term as a trustee on the Clovis High School board and acting as a ruling elder for the First Presbyterian Church and superintendent of the Jefferson Sunday School. Throughout his lifetime, Dawson maintained active ties across the country, crossing the mountains and plains a total of eleven times while raising six surviving children with his wife, Mary Ann.
