Cutting, David
David Cutting, born on November 19, 1849, in Oregon City, Oregon, established himself as a prominent dairyman and pioneer citizen in the vicinity of Tranquillity, Fresno County, California. He was the son of David Cutting Sr. and Mary Matoon, who originally crossed the plains by ox team from Indiana to Oregon in 1847 to engage in farming. Reared and educated in Oregon, the younger David Cutting married Mary F. Zamette on August 16, 1877, and later spent years developing a large livestock ranch in the eastern Oregon wilderness using a big W brand. His deep historical roots in the Pacific Coast country prepared him for further agricultural pursuits when he decided to relocate his family later in life.
In April 1910, after surveying the land around Tranquillity, Mr. Cutting purchased 171 acres of raw California land and officially moved his family to the property that October. He immediately improved the ranch by leveling and planting 100 acres to alfalfa and grain to build up a successful dairy business. Together with his wife, he raised a family that included surviving children Flora, Harry, Paul, Clarence, Anna, and Rodney, while two sons, George and Jones, passed away. Assisted by his sons Clarence and Rodney in running the daily operations of the ranch, this Republican platform supporter contributed significantly to the early farming infrastructure of Fresno County.
