Cummings, G. P.
G. P. Cummings, born in Warren County, Tennessee, on May 30, 1856, was the youngest of ten children born to G. P. Cummings, Sr., and Elizabeth Plumlee. After graduating from Burritt College, he worked as a school teacher for nine years before relocating to California in 1885. He initially taught school in Fresno County, later transitioning to commercial work as a grocery clerk and a partner in the firm Cummings and Higgins. His public service career began in January 1899 when he was appointed deputy county clerk and acting clerk of the board of supervisors. He quickly demonstrated efficiency, which led to his appointment as county assessor in July 1900 following the death of J. W. Ferguson.
Throughout his long tenure in public office, Mr. Cummings served as under-sheriff under J. D. Collins and was later elected county assessor in 1906. He also held significant leadership roles outside of his county duties, serving as president and secretary of the County Assessors Association of California, and as a member of the Fresno city board of education for five years. Married to Bettie Smartt, he raised several children, including Bonnie Jean, George, Annabel, and G. Penn, Jr., who served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was deeply involved in fraternal organizations, holding prominent positions in the Masons, Elks, Foresters, and the Knights of Pythias as Grand Chancellor of the Grand Domain of California. His dedicated service and pleasing personality earned him high respect and a lasting legacy as a foundational pioneer of Fresno County.
