Cucuk, John and Louis
John and Louis Cucuk, who were natives of Servia, built a highly prosperous life in California through sheer determination and good business management. John was born on June 27, 1880, while his nephew Louis was born on January 22, 1889. John arrived in Fresno County in 1903, and Louis followed a year or two later to join him in the region. They immediately went to work in local raisin vineyards, steadily learning every phase of the industry while practicing strict frugality.
By 1914, their combined savings allowed them to make the initial payment on a forty-acre raisin and fig ranch on North Avenue in the Lone Star section. They brought the property to a high state of productivity, with ten acres of figs alone yielding a harvest worth 9,000 dollars in 1918. Despite a setback when their barn burned down in 1918, they invested 3,500 dollars to construct a better barn, a new tank house, a garage, a tray shed, and a substantial solid brick residence. As successful partners invested in the California Associated Raisin Company, they became almost entirely free of debt while consistently supporting government initiatives and community relief efforts.
