Crawford, W. P.
W. P. Crawford, born at Chinese Camp in Tuolumne County on June 21, 1872, was the son of a gold-miner and cattleman who supplied mining camps with meat. Following his father death when W. P. was only eight years old, he began working on the Sutherland Estate while attending the local public school. Through this early employment, he gained extensive experience ranging cattle across the Laguna de Tache Grant and learned the foundations of the livestock business. He later rented the Fitzwilliam ranch, where he built an enviable reputation for his exceptional output in raising swine.
His recognized expertise in the livestock industry led to his appointment as State Stock Inspector and County Quarantine Master in 1907, offices he conducted with credit for many years alongside his role as State Sheep Inspector. Beyond his public service, he formed a successful business partnership called Wilson and Crawford with Hanford banker John A. Wilson to raise, buy, fatten, and sell cattle across Fresno and Kings counties. In 1913, he married Frances Hall, a native of Texas, with whom he had two children named Percy and Viola L. His dedication to his dual public offices and his extensive agricultural operations established him as a highly influential and respected figure in his region.
