Cox, William H.
William H. Cox, born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on June 20, 1882, was raised and educated in Dalton, Georgia, before returning to his birthplace to apprentice in the plumbing trade with Williams and Wood. He moved to California in the spring of 1906, working for three years in Sacramento under Henry Seiferman before co-founding the partnership Dixon and Cox at Eighteenth and L Streets. After the partnership dissolved in 1912, he operated independently at 516 K Street, securing major contracts such as the State University Farm dormitory in Davis and the Carnegie Public Library in Auburn. His early professional journey demonstrates a steady accumulation of expertise and an expanding reputation for reliable mechanical work across Northern California.
In the fall of 1914, Mr. Cox relocated to Fresno, establishing a highly successful contracting business that eventually moved to 2555 White Avenue in January, 1919. His extensive valley-wide operations included installing major plumbing and heating systems for the Liberty Market, the Liberty Theater, the Wormser Furniture Company Building, and numerous regional schools in Madera, Cutler, and Fresno. He married Utah native Maude Pauline Clark in Sacramento, and the couple welcomed two children, Clark and Mary. As an active community member, he participated in the Master Plumbers Association, held a Masonic membership with Center Lodge No. 465, and contributed significantly to the civic growth and physical infrastructure of Fresno County.
