Cook, John W.
John W. Cook, born near Jordan village in Owen County, Indiana, on May 7, 1858, became a successful rancher and adopted Californian after a lifetime of hard work and extensive travel. The son of George W. and Susan Cook, he was the seventh eldest of eleven children and the only one surviving in later years. After his father passed away during his seventeenth year, he remained at home in Clay City to assist his mother in running the family farm. He later married his schoolmate, Miss Alice Lankford, but following the consecutive deaths of his mother and his wife in 1800 and 1900, he sold the property to seek new opportunities. He traveled by wagon to Oklahoma and Eureka Springs, made multiple trips to North Dakota, and briefly homesteaded 160 acres in Saskatchewan, Canada, which he had to let revert to the government due to his poor health.
In 1909, Mr. Cook relocated to Fresno County, California, where he finally found satisfying prosperity and significantly improved his physical well-being. He initially purchased a ten-acre ranch on Section 15 and subsequently bought ten additional acres, establishing a twenty-acre property on Jensen Avenue, twelve miles west of Fresno. Through his own industrious efforts, he transformed the raw land by planting trees, alfalfa, and setting out vines. Aside from his agricultural pursuits, he raised two children, Lonzie and Cecil, who later resided in Fresno and Clay City respectively. Politically, he identified as a Democrat in national affairs but consistently supported local projects and voted for the best candidates regardless of party affiliations.
