Clifford, Charles Henry
Charles Henry Clifford, born in Queen City, Missouri, on September 13, 1864, was a dedicated public official and successful viticulturist in Fresno County, California. He gained early farming experience while attending local schools in Missouri before embarking on a series of moves to Iowa and Nebraska, where he purchased and improved an eighty-acre ranch. Attracted by opportunities in Central California, he relocated to Fresno County in 1894 with his sisters to manage a forty-acre tract of land. He planted this property with muscat and malaga vines, erected necessary buildings, and became an active member of the California Associated Raisin Company. His early background in agriculture prepared him well for a prosperous life of California husbandry.
Beyond his ranching success, Mr. Clifford served his community as a trusted public servant and dedicated family man. He married Sarah C. Oldham in 1888, and together they raised three children, Lulu, Luther, and Hazel, all of whom pursued pathways in education or military service. His own commitment to civic duty included six years of service as a school trustee in the Jefferson district and twenty years as a constable for the second judicial township of Fresno County. As a politically active Democrat who valued clean local leadership, he became a highly familiar figure across the region while utilizing horses, teams, and eventually automobiles for his official rounds. He was also an active member of the Clovis Lodge of Odd Fellows, leaving behind a proud historical legacy of civic fidelity.
