Clark, Herbert J.
Herbert J. Clark, born in London, England, on July 17, 1875, became a highly successful horticulturist and viticulturist after coming to Fresno in the middle eighties. He immigrated to the United States in 1886 with his parents, Joseph and Esther Clark, and his seven siblings, eventually settling in the Central Colony of Fresno County. He finished his education at the local Orange Center School and spent his youth assisting his father in mastering the fields of California husbandry. By the age of twenty, he began leasing vineyards to independently launch his own career in fruit and grape cultivation. This early foundational period allowed him to build the necessary expertise to transform local stubble fields into exceptionally valuable agricultural lands.
In 1899, Mr. Clark purchased forty acres of unimproved land in the Jefferson District, where he established three acres of peaches alongside Muscat and Malaga vines. His persistent labor and scientific methods earned him significant industry influence, leading to executive roles such as vice president and director of the Melvin Grape Growers Association. He also became an active and influential member of the California Peach Growers, Inc., and the California Associated Raisin Company. In his personal life, he married Kathryn Rogers of Iowa, with whom he had three children named Josephine, Vivian, and Marian. As a public spirited Republican and member of local lodges like the Elks and Woodmen of the World, his career left a lasting historical footprint on the Fresno community.
