Clark, Archibald W.
Archibald W. Clark, popularly known as Archie, was a successful rancher and dairyman born in Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, on January 25, 1870. The son of John M. Clark, an old Union soldier, and Sarah Rhone, he grew up in Pennsylvania until moving to the Dakota Territory in February 1888. In South Dakota, he weathered extreme environmental and economic panics, eventually helping build a local flour mill and homesteading 160 acres at Lily in Day County. He became heavily involved in Day County politics as a respected figure in the Republican party, establishing close personal friendships with several prominent local judges and political leaders. While in South Dakota, he married Mary Lawrence and rented a large 640 acre ranch for several years before seeking new agricultural opportunities on the Pacific Coast.
The family relocated to California in 1903, eventually settling on the Laguna de Tache Grant in Fresno County where Archibald acquired and developed a highly productive dairy farm. He built a home and a barn on his land, expanding his operations to include seventy acres of alfalfa, a dairy, and hog raising. Together, he and his wife raised six children named Hazel, Beulah, Ruth, Florence, Lawrence, and Ethel, with their daughter Ruth later marrying a local rancher named Roy Blackwell. In his fraternal life, Archibald became a dedicated member of the Odd Fellows while continuing to maintain his political affiliation as a Republican. His journey from the hardships of the Dakotas to his prosperous 110 acre ranch near Riverdale establishes his historical significance as a resilient, self made agriculturist in Fresno County.
