Church, Jesse R.
Jesse R. Church, born in Fresno on December 25, 1879, established himself as a reliable and conscientious contractor during a period of rapid city expansion. He was the son of John M. and Belle Springton Church, and he attended local public schools before completing a business course in Healdsburg, California. He initially worked in his father furniture store and learned the carpentry trade under contractor James M. Smith before launching his own successful contracting business. His deep local roots connected him to a multi-generational family legacy of regional development, as his mother was a native of Lake County and his father was an early Fresno business pioneer.
As an independent builder, Jesse R. Church constructed over one hundred buildings in Fresno, including a dormitory at the Normal School, four flat buildings, and numerous prominent private residences. His professional achievements allowed him to build and sell twelve personal homes before retiring from active operations. Beyond his professional contributions, he maintained a life-long involvement with the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Fresno, serving the congregation as a trustee and an elder. He was married to Maude May Shaw, a native of Nebraska who moved to Fresno in 1901 and served as a deaconess and officer in the church ladies auxiliary.
