Christian, George
George Christian, born at Tardekopfka, Russia, on September 22, 1865, was the son of Peter Christian and Sophia Reinhart. He was educated in his native land, learned farming, became fluent in both German and Russian, and trained as a wagon-maker before entering the Russian Army to serve a year in the 160th Infantry. Following an honorable discharge, he mastered cabinet-making and partnered with his brother Gotfried to manufacture wagons and buggies alongside his farming efforts. He married Marie Bell on January 30, 1886, and later chose to sell his business holdings to relocate his family to the United States. Arriving in Fresno on April 14, 1900, he initially worked on a ranch and in a brick yard before training in the carpenter trade.
By 1904, George began contracting and building in Fresno, establishing a successful career where he drew his own architectural plans to suit the precise wishes of his clients. While he focused primarily on construction, he also ventured into local commerce through brief partnerships in general merchandising, which included running an F Street store before selling it in 1913. As a dedicated community member, he served as the president of the Free Lutheran Cross Church congregation and maintained political influence within the Republican party. He and his wife raised three surviving children, Jacob, Fred, and Mollie, with Jacob serving overseas in France as a sergeant in the United States Army during the war. His industrious pursuits and leadership roles left a lasting entrepreneurial mark on the development of Fresno.
