Christian, Carl
Carl Christian, born on April 24, 1880, in Tarlikofka, Samara, Russia, was the youngest of nine children raised on a farm by Phillip and Marie Catherine Rinehart Christian. After completing his local education, he apprenticed as both a bricklayer and a shoemaker before entering the Russian Army cavalry regiment stationed at Keifskibolk. During his service in the Russo-Japanese War, his regiment suppressed a local revolution, during which he was twice wounded. He was honorably discharged as a non-commissioned officer in December 1906, married Mary Bideen in January 1907, and immigrated to Fresno, California, in May 1907.
Upon his arrival, Carl became a highly energetic viticulturist and horticulturist by buying, improving, and selling a succession of raw lands and vineyards across Jensen Avenue, Kutner Colony, and Gray Colony. Alongside his farming triumphs, he worked as a bricklayer and contracted for curing peaches, consistently turning a profit on his expanding real estate investments. He and his wife raised one son named Phillip, and they became active members of the Free Cross Lutheran Church where Carl served as a trustee. Additionally, he became a stockholder in the California Associated Raisin Company, the California Peach Growers, Inc., and the California Post weekly newspaper while performing his civic duties as a Republican.
