Christensen, George
George Christensen, born near Tondern, Schleswig, Germany, on May 26, 1870, was the son of Christian and Christine Christensen. He immigrated to America at age seventeen and arrived in Fresno on May 26, 1888, where he initially found vineyard work for ten dollars per month. He faced severe early financial setbacks, including a leased vineyard venture in 1893 that left him in debt due to an insolvent commission firm and a later partnership with F. J. Williams that suffered heavily from a dropping raisin market and a warehouse fire. Undeterred by these discouraging experiences, he purchased twenty-two and one-half acres in the Roosevelt District in the fall of 1901. He overcame rabbit infestations and grasshopper plagues to establish the first Thompson seedless vineyard in the vicinity, turning it into one of the finest properties in Fresno County.
An active community figure, Christensen joined the California Associated Raisin Company at its inception and served as a correspondent for his district. On October 12, 1910, he married Cecil Bemis, a Kansas native and graduate of the Los Angeles State Normal School who taught at the Barstow District School, and together they had one daughter named Rose. He remained deeply dedicated to his family, making three separate trips back to his old home, including a year-long stay to care for his paralyzed father until his passing in 1904. Fraternally, he associated with the Modern Woodmen of America while his wife took part in the Rolinda Methodist Church and local civic life. Guided by his father early advice to pay his debts and work hard, his ultimate success cemented his historical significance as a resilient pioneer of the Fresno County agricultural community.
