Christensen, George C.
George C. Christensen, born in Denmark on December 27, 1869, was the son of M. C. Christensen and Laura Bach. After attending local schools and being confirmed in the Lutheran Church, he began learning the blacksmith trade at age fifteen, eventually completing an apprenticeship in Randers. He later advanced to become a foreman at a carriage manufactory in Copenhagen, while simultaneously studying mechanical engineering and drafting at the Copenhagen Technical School. Desiring to perfect his skills, he sailed to America in July 1893, working for several years in prominent carriage shops across Providence, Rhode Island, and New York City.
In 1903, Christensen moved west to Fresno County and established the first blacksmith shop in Oleander. He later partnered with his brother to buy forty acres near Bowles, operating a farm alongside a large, up-to-date smithy known as Christensen Brothers. The brothers achieved great local success manufacturing specialized agricultural equipment, including their highly praised rotary harrows and vineyard trucks. Married to Nellie Nelson in Providence, with whom he raised eight children, Christensen earned a lasting reputation for strict integrity and high-quality service within his California community.
