Chiodi, John
John Chiodi, born in Italy on January 6, 1876, began working as a mercantile clerk at nine years old before eventually establishing his own store. In 1903, he immigrated to the United States and spent a year clerking near Chicago, Illinois, before moving to San Francisco, California, in 1905 to work for the Italian Swiss Colony Company. He later operated a fishing business on the Sacramento River in Solano County, where he purchased fish for the San Francisco market. His early career highlights the determination and adaptability of European immigrants who transitioned through multiple industries upon arriving in America.
In 1909, Mr. Chiodi moved to Fresno and established a billiard hall and cigar store on Fresno Street, eventually opening a wholesale and retail location on G Street in 1914. He became a prosperous businessman and a prominent leader within the local Italian colony, dedicating himself to assisting his fellow countrymen and representing their interests in the city. His civic involvement expanded significantly as he served as president of the Italian Division of the Order of Owls, held memberships in the Eagles, served on the Fresno County Draft Board, and purchased Liberty Bonds. Together with his wife, Emma Giordani, he raised six children named Emil, Matilda, Frances, Enrica, May, and Victoria in their home on Fresno Street.
